Your Experience Is Data

A loyal customer who keeps choosing the same product across upgrade cycles is providing a signal about business quality. That repeat purchase is not habit — it is a revealed preference that reflects something durable about the product or service.

When you are already a customer, you are not reading about the moat — you are living inside it. You feel the switching costs, the ecosystem lock-in, the quality differential, and the brand pull firsthand. This is information that no annual report can fully convey.

If you have bought the same brand of phone, computer, or car three or four times in a row, ask yourself why. The answer often points directly to a competitive advantage worth investigating further.

Where It Works Best

The consumer's edge is strongest with consumer-facing companies where you interact with the product regularly:

  • Phones and computers — you experience the hardware, software, and ecosystem daily
  • Cars — you understand reliability, build quality, and the ownership experience over years
  • E-commerce — you see delivery speed, selection, return policies, and pricing in real time
  • Subscription services — you know whether you actually use the product or just forget to cancel

Where It Falls Short

The consumer's edge is far less useful for B2B and enterprise companies where you have no direct experience as a customer. You cannot feel the moat of a database company or an industrial gas supplier from the outside.

For companies outside your direct experience, different research tools are required:

  • Earnings calls — management describes the competitive landscape in their own words
  • Industry books and reports — domain experts map out dynamics you cannot observe
  • Supply chain tracing — following products upstream to discover hidden businesses

The consumer's edge is one input among many, but it is a uniquely honest one — your own wallet does not lie to you.
